BRAHMS Symphony No. 3 in F major Op. 90
Music for Galway and Stewart Construction present the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, bringing virtuoso violinist Vadim Gluzman and celebrated young conductor Daniel Cohen to Leisureland Galway on Thursday, 27 April 2017, 8.00 pm.
The eclectic programme features works from Ireland, Russia and Germany. Dublin-born John Kinsella’s sublime Elegy for strings is full of shimmering, shadow-cast beauty. It provides a poetic prelude to Offertorium, Russian Sofia Gubaidulina’s searching, soaring violin concerto, with violinist Vadim Gluzman at its dark glittering helm.
Brahms’ third symphony boasts all the intricacy of his chamber music and the complexity of his works for piano in a deeply-felt masterpiece whose confessional intimacy is intensely moving. It was programmed to fit in with Music for Galway’s Aimez-vous Brahms? season, and offers the opportunity to sample one of the composer’s finest orchestral compositions.
Vadim Gluzman’s extraordinary artistry brings to life the glorious violinistic tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries. Gluzman’s wide repertoire embraces new music and his performances are heard around the world through live broadcasts and a striking catalogue of award-winning recordings exclusively for the BIS label.
Daniel Cohen is in his second year as Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and this season he will conduct performances of Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and Il barbiere di Siviglia there. In 2017 he will also return to the Teatro Massimo di Palermo. Cohen also frequently works with the New Israeli Opera. Cohen’s orchestral engagements in the 2016/17 season include debuts with the Dresdner Philharmonie, Helsinki Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Berlin and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, as well as a return to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic and the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale. He also returns to Jersey Chamber Orchestra, where he was Music Director from 2008-2016. Highlights from last season included return engagements to the Sinfonieorchester Basel, Orchestra of the Norrlandsoperan, and orchestra of the Teatro Massimo di Palermo.
Always very warmly welcomed by Galway audiences, this is the third time in as many years that the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra returns to Leisureland. The orchestra plays a central role in classical music in Ireland through year-long programmes of live performances, schools and educational projects, broadcasts on RTÉ lyric fm and internationally through the European Broadcasting Union, recordings and new commissions. The Galway visit of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra is made possible by the generous sponorship of Stewart Construction. Music for Galway would like to thank the Stewart Family for their support.
Come and savour the power and majesty of the Orchestra on its annual visit to the west.
