Centenary of the ‘Sacred Heart Church’, Belclare, Co. Galway

We would like to send our congratulations to Fr Ciarán Blake and the community of Belclare, Co. Galway, who celebrated the centenary of the ‘Sacred Heart Church’ at the weekend.

The church was designed by Mr. R. M. Butler and built by James Stewart.
It replaced an older church ‘St. Michael the Archangel’ which was situated just 200 yards away in Churchfriar on the northern slope of Knockmea.

The ‘Sacred Heart Church’ Belclare, was dedicated by Dr. Gilmartin, Archbishop of Tuam on Sunday, August 31st 1924.
A special Mass to commemorate the centenary was held yesterday, Sunday 1st September 2024 at 10am, at which retired Archbishop of Tuam, Michael Neary was the celebrant.

Congratulations to all involved in the celebrations.

***It was while visiting a sand pit owned by the O’Dea’s in Belclare, to get sand needed for the concrete to build the church, that Jack (son of James Stewart) met his future wife, Margaret. Jack and Margaret were the parents of our esteemed former Chairman Seán Stewart who sadly passed away last week.
